Third Meeting of the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement Joint Commission Convened

On July 24, the third meeting of the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA) Joint Commission was held via video link. The meeting was co-chaired by Yan Dong, Vice Minister of Commerce of China, and George Mina, Deputy Secretary, Trade and Investment Group of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Australia.

The two sides agreed that the important consensus reached by the state leaders provided significant strategic guidance for further deepening bilateral economic and trade cooperation. They highly praised the fruitful outcomes of bilateral economic and trade cooperation through the implementation of ChAFTA over the past decade and recognized its important role in promoting the development of bilateral economic and trade relations. The two sides expressed their commitment to maintaining open cooperation, upholding multilateralism and free trade, and leveraging the 10th anniversary of ChAFTA implementation to deepen and expand mutually beneficial cooperation, explore the potential of the ChAFTA, and continuously enhance the level of trade and investment liberalization and facilitation.
The Joint Commission received reports from subsidiary committees on trade in goods, trade in services, intellectual property and so on, reviewed the implementation of the ChAFTA in various fields since its entry into force, and discussed the implementation of the memorandum of understanding on the implementation and review of the ChAFTA. The two sides agreed to advance the review process to identify areas for further improvement or expansion and made corresponding work arrangements. The two sides also exchanged views on their respective trade and investment concerns.
ChAFTA came into effect on December 20, 2015.
